OK, so you know I have a Durango. The rack and pinion setup for the power steering failed a while back. I have the 2000 model year SLT with the 4.7 motor and 4x4. My mom has a '99 Durango SLT 4x4 but this one is the 5.9 motor. The power steering on that one failed as well. The odd thing with that is that it's a box setup instead of a rack and pinion setup. Both vehicles are the same exact body style and aside from color and interior features, are visually indistinguishable, so why the big difference in steering setup?

I imagine the steering box helps clear the larger engine. The 4.7l is a PowerTech engine and is much smaller than the LA block. The 4.7l is a taller OHV design, the LA (Magnum) engine is a much wider/longer block. A Rack and Pinion would probably have a straight (or nearly straight) collapsible steering column, which may not clear the engine mounts or accessories as easily, perhaps. No idea, but that's what my gut says.
